Lucky Daye- Paralyzed (feat RAYE)
Remember how we talked about sacred reinterpretation? Well I want you to hear me out.. Paralyzed is a love song of course but as a true lover and yearner I want you to hear what I hear.
When I listen to Paralyzed, I don’t just hear a love song. I hear two people speaking to each other across time and space, almost telepathically. It feels like two people who haven’t yet met in the physical, but whose spirits already recognize each other, urging one another to move forward and not be afraid.
As with any relationship, whether with yourself, a lover, or with God there are always three themes to remember…
Truth. Vulnerability. Surrender.
This song encompasses all three and reminds me of the push and pull of the right timing.. or divine timing. Understanding that love exists but it might not be the time for it to be tangible. This song also reminds me that love doesn’t begin when you meet each other.. it’s like your soul is waiting and communicating to each other “I’m on my way”.
He starts the song off singing, “When it’s said and done / Life is better sharing with someone / All in your head / Questioning what intuition says” This is the first theme..Truth. The truth is life is meant to be shared. Our love should be shared. Our minds may question or fear this but this verse affirms that union is sacred and is waiting to be recognized.
Vulnerability enters the chat when he sings, “And I know you see me paralyzed / How can we prepare for life? / Don’t compete or compare with mine / Pair with mine with those pair of eyes”. In the context of the song to be “paralyzed” means to frozen between fear and desire. The song becomes a plea, “pair with me, see with me, be with me”. The courage to be vulnerable transforms into something beautiful.
RAYE enters the song...singing her face off and says, “It’s hard to find the words for this but here it goes / I’ve been defeated by love like I have never known”. This is where the third theme surrender is found. She is admitting that she is undone by love. When she says “defeated” it’s more of a revelation and not ruin. Think of it as an ego transformation..preparing you for something greater!
She goes on to say, “Intuition says, ‘Run for the door, save yourself’ / But to leave both you and my heart in this room, I would’ve played myself” This line captures how illogical love can be. It terrifies us because it demands all of us. Fear says run. But truth says stay, because to abandon the connection would be to abandon your own heart.
My favorite part is, “And if you like it, you’re cordially invited / To give me one of your babies” RAYE closes with creation. Love does more than connect..it extends and multiplies.
Paralyzed is ultimately a ballad about longing. Two souls are willing to take the risk of love, they fear surrender but are willing to do it anyway, they find beauty in being claimed, and are willing to find joy in creating new life and something eternal.
